A seven-part reading series

January 2025

The patterns of a spiritual life.

Seven overlapping ways of encountering the sacred. Not a ladder to climb, but patterns we return to, question, and inhabit together.

Pattern 1 of 7 · Christian spirituality

Awakening

A direct encounter with compassionate presence awakens trust that we are loved. Crisis or astonishment can open a lifelong journey of transformation.

Read the source essay →

Pattern 2 of 7 · Christian spirituality

Tribal

Community nurtures belonging and spiritual growth. Its challenge is to keep shared traditions from becoming boundaries that exclude the stranger.

Read the source essay →

Pattern 3 of 7 · Christian spirituality

Warrior

Courage protects others and pursues justice. It becomes destructive when righteousness hardens into hostility toward those outside the tribe.

Read the source essay →

Pattern 4 of 7 · Christian spirituality

Cultural

The church serves reconciliation and the common good. It risks accommodating culture until Sunday convictions no longer shape daily life.

Read the source essay →

Pattern 5 of 7 · Christian spirituality

Pluralistic

Different traditions can expand love through equal conversation and shared discovery. The challenge is to keep the conviction needed for commitment and action.

Read the source essay →

Pattern 6 of 7 · Christian spirituality

Creation

Recognizing creation as sacred expands identity beyond the tribe. It calls us to care for an interconnected, evolving world.

Read the source essay →

Pattern 7 of 7 · Christian spirituality

Mystical

God, humanity, and creation are experienced in communion. Otherness gives way to a deeper, more inclusive practice of compassionate care.

Three crossings in one view — each panel holds a photograph from the archive and the question that followed it onto the page. Built from images/, articles-about/, and 90 Real Change columns.

Hospitality

The table, not the line

Spokane Shalom Ministries re-centered the meal from queue to circle. Dignity arrived when the table belonged to everyone. From articles-about — tent-city, RLUIPA, Shalom.

Nonviolent discipline

After the pepper spray

November 15, 2011 — stole and alb at 5th & Pine. The essay the next morning asked how peace keeps discipline when the air burns. Pairs with 2011 Talking Stick TV on Christian Fascism.

Cross the threshold →
Empire & faith

Christian Fascism, corporate rule

Two 2011 conversations named the merger of market, nation, and sectarian power — and the spiritual alternative that refuses it. Real Change columns 2012–2018 extend the argument.

A common table

Four ways to read
together.

Before a book club meets, a rule of life helps. Four practices drawn from the seven patterns — each with a place to begin.

Read

Arrive with a question

Open the week's pattern aloud, then name what it asks of you — not what you've already answered.

Enter the seven patterns →
Listen

Let another voice finish

Practice the pluralistic threshold: hospitality for a perspective that unsettles your own, without rushing to reconcile it.

Notice where you stand

Tribal, warrior, cultural — name the pattern that currently holds you, and the one that calls you outward.

Book clubs & shared reading

Make room for
the conversation.

Good reading grows in company. Begin with the spirituality series, bring a question, and make space for another person's experience.

Suggested discussion rhythms
  1. Open with silence — one minute to arrive.
  2. Read the week's pattern aloud.
  3. Name what resonated and what resisted.
  4. Share a question the text raised for you.
  5. Close with a single intention for the week.
